Headache After Tooth Extraction: Is This Common?

A lot of things can cause a headache. Not drinking enough water can cause pain or maybe the high level of stress can be the reason behind your migraines. But, if you're constantly dealing with a headache accompanied by tooth pain, it may be time to see your dentist. Wisdom teeth, for example, can cause discomfort that feels like a headache, especially if they are impacted. That happens because of the pressure they put on your jaw.

But, let's say you just removed your wisdom tooth and are now looking forward to a pain-free life. But, surprise, surprise, your head still hurts. How is that possible? And, is it even normal to have a headache after a tooth extraction?

Why You May Have a Headache After Tooth Extraction

It's not uncommon to experience a headache after a tooth extraction and here's why it happens:

  • Anesthesia: The dentist is going to use a local anesthetic to numb the area and give you a pain-free treatment. But, as the effects of the anesthesia wear off, the pain from the extraction might cover the anesthetic's effects, resulting in pain.
  • Muscle Tension: You will have to keep your mouth open for a while during the treatment and that can strain the muscles of the jaw. This strain can lead to tension headaches, especially around the temples.
  • Trauma: Teeth extractions are common procedures in a dentist's office, but they can still take a toll on your body. The force and pressure exerted on the tooth while being pulled from the socket can lead to headaches.
  • Sinus Issues: If an upper tooth needs to be extracted, there is a slight chance of sinus perforation since these teeth are very close to the sinuses. This can cause a headache together with symptoms similar to a sinus infection.

Should You Be Concerned?

Mild headaches can be a normal side effect after tooth extraction and they usually resolve on their own in a few days.

However, if the headache is accompanied by fever, severe swelling, intense pains, and discharge from the extraction site, it's essential to get in touch with your dentist immediately. These are the signs of an infection and you need urgent dental care

How to Manage Your Headache After Tooth Extraction

  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, to get some relief if the headache is too uncomfortable.
  • Take some time off and rest to help the body heal faster.
  • A cold compress can also offer some headache relief.
  • Keep the extraction site clean to prevent infections.
